Golden Gate Bridge

After an excellent sleep (nealy ten hours!) we thought we'd do something energetic today. it was grey and cold to start, but we decided to hire bikes and cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge anyway. It takes about an hour and a quarter from Fisherman's Wharf to Sausalito on the far side. There were people painting the bridge its distinctive colour -- some of them in a box halfway up one of the vertical wires.

In Sausalito, the sun was out and it was much warmer. After a good lunch at Winships Restaurant, we went to see the model of the Bay area. This was built in the 1950s by the Army engineers, to simulate the tides and currents of the Bay. It covers one and a half acres. Nowadays, they use a computer.

After getting the ferry back to Fisherman's Wharf and returning the bikes to Blazing Saddles, we paid a return visit to the Cable Car Museum.

The four loops of cables which pull the cars all return to the building which houses the museum. The system is quite complicated, and how it doesn't go wrong more often I've no idea!

In the evening, we had a drink at the Carnelian Room lounge on the 52nd floor of the Bank of America building, which has fantastic views, particularly of the TransAmerica Pyramid. Then dinner at the Washington Square Bar and Grill (known as the WashBAG!)
